A drunk driver killed a 22-year-old Arizona woman who was planning to spend the holiday weekend with her boyfriend in San Diego in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Nestor Alejandro Hernandez, 22, reportedly slammed into Vanessa Abigail Urbina Aragonez when she was standing on the side of the road in the Crown Point area.

Officials stated her boyfriend, 24-year-old Brian Armenta Zamora, was critically injured and had to be rescued from beneath the pick-up truck.

Both the young couple and the accused drunk driver had been drinking prior to the accident.

“It’s not fair,” Aragonez’s brother, Eduardo Urbina, told NBC San Diego. “Someone just wanted to have one night of fun and destroyed a life because of that it’s not worth it.”

Eduardo claimed Urbina and Zamora exited a bar and phoned an Uber after discovering their SUV had a flat tyre while parked on Riviera Drive.

According to the Medical Examiner, Urbina was standing near the passenger side door just before 1:30 a.m. when she was hit by a man driving a pick-up truck.

The young woman was declared dead on the street “due to obvious trauma,” according to the report.

Zamora was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries after being trapped beneath the automobile.

Eduardo told 12News that his sister, a full-time Mesa Community College nursing student, and Zamora had been dating for six years and hoped to marry shortly.

Nestor Alejandro Hernandez was charged with driving under the influence.
Urbina was a full-time nursing student at Mesa Community College.

“Her soul spoke to you,” Eduardo said. ‘It was a nice, kind soul. There never was a dull moment around my sister. She always had you laughing in some kind of way. Just a bright person who always made your day better.”

According to police documents, Hernandez was detained and held in a San Diego detention centre without bail.

He is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated vehicular manslaughter, and driving under the influence.
