Dr. Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, has expressed his sympathies in the wake of the deaths of staff members at the Eastern Cape’s Ikhala Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College.

Following a head-on collision on Wednesday, three employees and two interns perished.

The event occurred when the deceased collided with a truck while they were heading toward the Aliwal North Campus.

The deceased, according to the report, were travelling from the Ikhala TVET College Central Office to the Aliwal North Campus in a college car to perform work.

The five victims, Senior Exam Officer Monwabisi Siwa, Secretary to the Deputy Principal Academic Services Christina Tingashe-Caba, Intern in the Principal’s Office Melisizwe Manzi, Intern in Corporate Services Bukelwa Baleka, and Intern at Ezibeleni Engineering Campus Yandiswa Cwayi, were pronounced dead at the scene by medical and emergency personnel.

Nzimande has expressed his sympathies to the Ikhala College students, faculty, staff, and friends.

In this trying time, Nzimande added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the departed.”

He pointed out that the unfortunate incident took place during the inaugural two-day TVET Colleges Strategic Industry Partnerships Summit, which is being held by the Department of Higher Education and Training with the aim of fostering dynamic and strategic partnerships between the department, TVET colleges, and the industry.

The Minister has instructed Higher Health to work with college administration to offer the immediate family and coworkers of the deceased the appropriate psychosocial support and consolation.
