DPWI and Noorder Paarl High School are permitted to use Sandrift Sports Facility

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has agreed to let Noorder Paarl High School utilise the Sandrift Sports Facility.

The school principal and community members asked about using the land earlier this year since the school needed sports facilities and it wasn’t being utilised.

As the custodian of state-owned properties, the department must provide land or buildings for government departments.

Through sale, donation, or leasing, the department may also enter into agreements with community-based organisations to use properties not being used by government for community purposes.

Noorder Paarl High School, a no-fee school with almost 1,000 students, needs suitable sports facilities.

The school approached the department about using the field, and after completing numerous due procedures, we signed a User Agreement with the school on August 5, 2022.

“This arrangement with Noorder Paarl High School is in accordance with my belief that we must utilise public land for public benefit,” de Lille stated.

She stated the school administration and governing council appreciated this deal, adding it will help them provide sports with good facilities.

The Minister said many schools and community organisations do wonderful work in areas and “access to athletic facilities is crucial” for young people and the community.

Access to infrastructure and property is one way the government can help communities feel like they belong and fulfil their full potential, she said.

“Under-resourced areas struggle to nurture young sports potential owing to a lack of facilities.

We must collaborate with communities to create accessible venues so they may carry out community upliftment and development activity.

“Many of our country’s best athletic talents originate from Paarl, like the late Chester Williams, who had to go beyond Paarl to practise sports.

We must do more to support communities by giving access to land and services so they may fulfil their aspirations,” the Minister stated.

She said the department’s duties include monitoring the agreement to guarantee building efficiency and user compliance.

The department will also renovate the facilities.

Noorder Paarl High School may use the field for different sports in accordance with the law and agreement.

“I think this deal will help the school develop young athletes and offer them a safe place to play.”

Sport is vital for social development, and sports grounds provide youngsters a secure haven where they may develop their gifts, de Lille stated.
