The community of KwaThema was left in shock this week when a dog returned with a decomposing mutilated body part.
According to reports, the Kwa-Thema police received a complaint on Monday, 24 April, after the dog’s owner discovered a human forearm and hand in the animal’s mouth.
The owner had initially assumed it was an animal bone until he examined it closely.
He then instructed the dog to drop the arm and immediately contacted the police.
The police arrived at the scene along Mthombeni street Extension 3 Kwa-Thema, where they found the arm.
Emergency Medical Services were called to confirm that the remains were indeed human.
The Johannesburg K9 unit was also called to the scene and led investigators to an unknown African male in his early 20s in the early stages of decomposition, who was found hidden in the reeds near the water in the furrow.
The deceased was removed by local Forensic Pathology services, and a case of inquest has been opened for investigation to determine the cause of death.
Acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Sikhosana, who was in attendance at the scene, urged anyone who has a missing person who fits the description or has any information to please contact Kwa-Thema SAPS.
