Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) to conduct extensive public engagements on Unconventional Gas Regulations in different parts of the country

This week, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will hold numerous public meetings across the nation to discuss the Unconventional Gas Regulations.

The published Unconventional Gas Regulations, which were created in accordance with Section 38 of the National Water Act of 1998, were the subject of departmental meetings with internal and external stakeholders.

When using water for unconventional gas activities, the regulations specify conditions and guidelines.

The government announced that “public dialogues will begin, with a focus on impacted areas in the provinces where unconventional gas activities are being piloted or are anticipated for future usage.”

Communities in the impacted areas are expected to provide comments during the engagements before the regulations are finalised and gazetted.

The following communities will host the public engagements from July 25 to July 28, 2022:

25 July 2022 – Theunissen Town Hall in the Free State

26 July 2022 – Richmond Town Hall in the Northern Cape

27 July 2022 – Laingsburg, JJ Ellis Sports Complex in the Western Cape

28 July 2022 – Beaufort West Youth Hub in the Western Cape.
