Former Mets third baseman David Wright shared his insights into the challenges facing Aaron Judge this season. Wright, who was named captain of the Mets prior to the 2013 season after signing a huge contract, understands the pressure that comes with both being a captain and living up to a big deal.

He emphasized that it’s tough because outside pressure is already present, but as a captain, poor performance could diminish the value of his words. Despite this, Wright believes Judge, who recently signed a massive nine-year, $360 million contract with the Yankees, will be successful in his new role.

Wright himself signed a seven-year, $138 million deal with the Mets after a strong season in 2012, but injuries ultimately led to the end of his career in 2015. He empathized with Judge, saying it was devastating not to be able to play, especially as captain of the team. Despite his injuries, Wright is still involved with the Mets organization and spent time with third-base prospects Brett Baty and Mark Vientos during his visit to Mets camp.

Wright praised Judge for his on-field abilities, marketing, personality, and representation of Major League Baseball. He noted that Judge seems like a genuine person who understands the pressures of performing in New York. Wright, who plans to emcee the charity baseball game between the NYPD and FDNY in August, has never met Judge but is still a big fan of his game.
