Dan Andrews defends Victoria Covid lockdown as report slams school closures, public health rules

Premier Dan Andrews of Victoria has praised his Covid decision-making in the wake of a new study thatshed light on pandemic shortcomings, including as the excessive use of lockdowns and border closures.

The independent evaluation of Australia’s reaction to the Covid outbreak criticized politically motivated health orders and the excessive use of lockdowns, concluding that they ultimately failed to safeguard the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.

Former prime minister’s office secretary Peter Shergold led the 97-page assessment, which advised federal and state governments to learn from their failures and change their processes in order to regain trust.

Yet, on Thursday, Victorian Premier Dan Andrews defended his Covid restrictions, which led in the world’s longest lockdown of 262 days.

As a new assessment sheds light on pandemic failings, like as the overuse of lockdowns and border closures, the Victorian premier Dan Andrews doubles down on his Covid decision-making.

Mr. Andrews stated, “There are many, many, many things we wish we didn’t have to do and many, many decisions we wish we didn’t have to make.”

Because there are repercussions, it goes without saying that these decisions were not made frivolously and were subject to debate, discussion, and thorough analysis.

“We decided as a group that we would make the difficult, challenging sacrifice in order to avert (the repercussions), and we did it.”

“The difficulty lies in weighing these repercussions against death rates comparable to those in Italy, the majority of the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Dan Andrews boasted of Victoria’s lengthy lockdown against Covid, stating, ‘We showed the rest of the country.’

Mr. Andrews complimented his state before taking aim at the rest of Australia for making fun of Victoria, stating, “We showed the rest of the country who’s boss.”

“We have always stated that these are extremely difficult decisions, none of them were simple, and none of them were made lightly, which is why we are so profoundly proud of every single Victorian who contributed so much,” he said.

We demonstrated to the rest of the country, many of whom felt it was amusing to ridicule Victorians, that if we stick together and have a sense of unity, we can accomplish anything, and we did.

The Covid report, which was supported by the Paul Ramsay Foundation, the John and Myrtle Wylie Foundation, and Andrew Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation, determined that the closure of the nation’s schools was unjustified.

An independent evaluation of Australia’s reaction to the Covid virus stated that the country’s pre-existing problems were aggravated, and that “overreach” must be avoided in future crises.

The evaluation stated that it was inappropriate to close entire school districts after new information suggested that schools were not high-transmission areas.

An independent review into Australia's Covid response found actions taken exacerbated existing issues within the country, noting 'overreach' must be avoided in future crises

We failed to strike the proper balance between safeguarding health and imposing long-term costs on education, mental health, the economy, and workforce outcomes for children and parents [especially women].

Too often, rules were written and implemented without fairness and compassion. This excess eroded the public’s trust and confidence in the institutions necessary for effective disaster response.

Mr. Andrews stated that his state was going above and beyond by employing “thousands of tutors” to ensure that all students make up any missed schoolwork due to school closures.

He stated, “We may be positive about the future, because there are direct assistance to ensure that every child has every opportunity.”

Therefore, we employ hundreds of tutors in every school to ensure that every child receives the assistance necessary to make up for any missed material.

The analysis finds that it was improper to close entire school districts once new research suggested that schools were not high-transmission environments.

Mr. Andrews stated that while his state could have performed better in certain areas, the pandemic was not a “academic” task and there are always lessons to be learned from any catastrophe.

He stated, “There are always lessons learned, and there are numerous reports.”

This event had nothing intellectual about it; it was really real.

This is an ongoing process of improvement and education.

Over the course of six months, more than 350 private submissions and consultations were received from health professionals, economists, public servants, business and community groups for the Fault Lines inquiry.

It included over 160 contributions and 3,000 hours of study, policy analysis, and data analysis.

The 97-page Fault Lines analysis encouraged federal and state governments to learn from their failures and restructure mechanisms to restore public confidence in the decision-making process.

The assessment determined that various lockdowns and border closures should have been a “last resort.”

The assessment noted, “Too many of Australia’s lockdowns and border closures were the result of policy failings in quarantine, contact tracing, testing, disease surveillance, and effectively communicating the need for preventive measures like as mask wearing and social separation.”

‘Those who were most restricted had a significant feeling of inequality during lockdowns, especially when they were targeted at a specific place. Overall, lockdowns gave the impression that the epidemic was being policed rather than managed.

As with lockdowns, border closures – especially between states and territories – should be employed sparingly and only in extreme circumstances. They should be implemented with greater sensitivity and adaptability.

The evaluation revealed that although the epidemic affected everyone, “its burden was not borne fairly.”

DAMNING QUOTES FROM COVID REPORT

It noted that the lack to appropriately plan for the “variable impact of Covid” caused the disease to “spread faster and further.”

In comparison to other nations, Australia’s early success in reducing infection rates and fatalities began to wane in 2021, according to the assessment.

The assessment states, “Cases and deaths increased considerably worse in 2022, significantly negating our early competitive advantage.”

Australia has registered 378,617 incidents per million population as of September 30, 2022.

The most recent official data available indicates that the rate of excess fatalities in Australia increased to over 359 per million inhabitants by May of 2022.

According to the document, the “lack of transparency” in the expert health advice “aided in concealing political calculations.”

The assessment stated, “Political consideration was never far from the surface of COVID-19 decisions.”

In an accountable democracy, it is not possible nor desirable to eliminate politics from the decision-making process.

However, the lack of transparency in the technical counsel leaders received helped conceal political calculations.

It was difficult to assess the trade-offs between health and economic outcomes that were being examined. It made it simpler for leaders to choose which ‘professional advise’ to follow.
