The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning to release running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Elliott was taken fifth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft and spent seven seasons with the Cowboys.

He made three Pro Bowls and was first-team All-Pro in his rookie year, but his production has suffered in recent years due to nagging injuries.

In 2022, Elliott averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry, and his receiving production has gradually declined in every season since signing a six-year, $90 million extension in 2019.

His targets, catches, and yards per reception have all gone down every year since then, and he has not had a season over 4.5 yards per carry since signing the extension.

Tony Pollard, whom the Cowboys gave the franchise tag, took more and more work away from Elliott as the 2022 season went along, with Elliott having his least amount of carries and targets that year.

With Pollard’s large price tag and Elliott’s non-guaranteed $16 million cap number becoming untenable, the Cowboys have reportedly decided to release him.

The move has yet to be officially confirmed by the team, but it could happen as soon as Wednesday when the new league year officially begins at 4 p.m.
