Actor and producer Craig Russell, known for his roles in the BBC series Pitching in and Netflix’s The Last Kingdom, announced on social media that he would be undergoing emergency brain surgery on March 6.
Russell, who is from the Swansea Valley near Cwmtwrch and married to actress Kate Edney, shared the news on Twitter and thanked the NHS for their care.
The announcement garnered hundreds of good luck messages from well-wishers, including a GoFundMe page set up to support Russell and his family during his recovery.
The fundraising page was created by Eleanor Meo and Torchwood star Eve Myles and has raised over £16,000 from 300 donations in just 18 hours.
The appeal states that the recovery will take time and it may be difficult for Kate to work while caring for Craig and their children.
The funds raised will help to ease some of the financial pressure on the family, covering expenses such as childcare, hotel stays for Kate, and their mortgage and bills.
Welsh actors and celebrities left messages of support on social media, with Welsh actor Steven Meo sharing the fundraiser and encouraging people to donate.
Russell shared an update on the morning of his surgery, thanking everyone for their love, generosity and support.
He expressed his confidence ahead of the operation and stated that he would see everyone on the other side.
