On Monday, the US ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, called on the Chinese government to be more transparent about the origins of COVID-19 following a report by the US Energy Department that suggests the virus may have leaked out of a lab in Wuhan.

Speaking at a US Chamber of Commerce event, Burns stated that the Chinese Communist Party needs to be more honest about what happened in Wuhan three years ago with regards to the COVID-19 crisis.

Burns believes that promoting cooperation between Washington and Beijing requires China to take a more active role in the World Health Organization (WHO) and strengthen the UN health agency.

The Department of Energy report on COVID-19 origins suggests that the virus most likely leaked out of a lab researching coronaviruses by accident, and this theory seems to match what Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee wrote in an interim report last year.

China has rejected calls for transparency from the WHO and the US with regard to COVID-19 origin tracing, and China’s vice minister of the National Health Commission dismissed the lab leak theory as a rumour.

Burns noted that US-China relations have been strained since the downing of a Chinese spy balloon that drifted over the US mainland earlier this month. Burns called the Chinese surveillance balloon and Beijing’s position on the war in Ukraine the two most important issues they are dealing with right now.
