COP26 President Alok Sharma to travel to India

COP26 President Alok Sharma to travel to India

Alok Sharma, the president of COP26, will visit India on July 21 and 22, 2022.

Following COP26 in Glasgow and in the lead-up to India’s G20 Presidency, the visit provides an opportunity to reengage with India on climate policy as well as to enhance and support the progress and delivery of the Glasgow Climate Pact.

Alok Sharma will continue the work of the UK COP Presidency during his third visit to the nation as COP President.

He will meet with senior ministers and leaders in the climate and energy sectors to discuss India’s ambitious climate plans and developments in smart grid upgrades, electric vehicles, and reasonably priced energy storage.

Mr. Sharma will proceed to the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) campus in Delhi, which is home to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) headquarters.

There, he will see the production of renewable energy in action and talk about how to develop the Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG), a product of a cooperation between the UK and India that aims to increase support for green power infrastructure on a worldwide scale.

Mr. Sharma will be in Delhi for the joint launch of UK-India initiatives on electric transportation, which will be held at the apex government think tank NITI Aayog.

Initiated under the UK’s COP26 Presidency, the relationship between the UK Government and NITI Aayog has been crucial in advancing ZEV efforts.

He will stop by the Centre for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) to learn about recent developments and to talk about next plans.

As India experiences record heatwaves, Mr. Sharma will also meet with the neighbourhood to learn how climate change is affecting them personally and how high heat affects their way of life in the city.

President of COP26, Alok Sharma, stated:

With plans to phase out fossil fuel-based energy and an expanding portfolio of renewable, India’s green revolution is gaining momentum.

I have previously praised India for its goals for emissions reduction, and I firmly believe that fulfilling these promises will have a significant good effect.

India is moving toward a low-carbon, self-sufficient future as the UK continues to support it.

I’m interested to learn how the UK can help India further in putting its COP26 promises into action at this crucial juncture before COP27 and the deadline for the NDC Synthesis Report.

Ahead to COP27 in Egypt, the COP President will meet with governments, states, enterprises, and civil society after his visit to India by travelling to Australia and then Fiji.
