Plans are in motion to pay tribute to the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, during New York’s 63rd Independence Day celebration.
Ambassador Lot Egopija, the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, announced that a dinner in the singer’s honor is scheduled for Monday, October 2, as part of the festivities.
Mohbad’s sudden passing had sparked controversy and profound sadness. In collaboration with Nigerian Associations in America (NOA), the Consulate intends to host the dinner after a flag-raising event dedicated to the late artist.
The event’s theme, “Nigeria@63, Renewed Hope for Unity and Prosperity,” carries a message of optimism for Nigerians living in the U.S. Ambassador Egopija urged them to maintain hope for their homeland and its leadership, emphasizing that they should believe in their ability to achieve their aspirations.
Despite the loss of Mohbad, who was originally invited to perform as the special artist at the festival, his memory will be honored during the event.
Cultural groups and Nigerian associations in America will showcase their heritage and promote tourism within their respective ethnic communities.
Mayor Eric Adams has also committed to participating, ensuring the success of both the festival and the parade. The parade will commence at 2nd Avenue and East 54th Street, concluding at Dag Hammarskjold Park, where the festival will be held.
Ambassador Egopija extended an invitation to all Nigerians to join in the celebrations, emphasizing that unity is crucial in overcoming challenges and that celebrating Nigeria is a collective endeavor.
