Commissioner demands quick arrest in Fort Hare assassination

Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, has ordered the immediate arrest of the suspects who murdered the 52-year-old driver of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare in Alice on January 6, 2023 at approximately 8:20 p.m.

The police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, stated that members of the public alerted the SAPS about the shooting event. Upon arrival, the body of the dead was actually discovered in the vehicle.

Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare survived an assassination attempt.

According to the complaint, the driver was approaching the Vice Chancellor’s residence when an unfamiliar car with unknown passengers approached. The suspects opened fire on the victim, who succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene.

Later, the suspects fled in their getaway vehicle. “The police have opened a murder investigation,” he stated.

He stated that the incident’s surrounding circumstances will be investigated as well. No arrests have been made thus far.

The police will not rest until the suspects are apprehended.

We will not rest or sleep until these cold-blooded criminals are located.

According to Kinana, the Vice-Chancellor was not in the vehicle at the time of the event.

“Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to contact the Alice Police Station or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 08600 10111,” he begged.

Eastern Cape has been plagued by suspected political assassinations since the previous year.

In August 2022, Buffalo City Acting City Manager Nceba Ncunyana evaded a second attempt on his life.

This assault occurred less than a year after Ncunyana’s home was apparently attacked. This time, though, the gunmen approached him in his white Mercedes-Benz SUV.

He escaped with an arm wound after his vehicle was showered with bullets, particularly in the rearview mirror.
The ANC in the province denounced the incident.
