During Thursday’s “Inside the NBA” show on TNT, Charles Barkley expressed his admiration for Jalen Brunson’s abilities as a player, calling him “arguably one of the best free agent pickups in NBA history” and highlighting the historical achievements he has made this season.
Although Barkley acknowledged that Brunson isn’t at the same level as LeBron James or Kevin Durant, he emphasized that the consensus opinion before this season was that the Knicks had overpaid for the point guard with a deal worth $104 million over four years.
Barkley argued that Brunson’s outstanding performance during the playoffs after Luka Doncic’s late-season calf injury showed what he’s capable of and that he has continued to excel this season.
The 26-year-old is averaging 23.8 points and 6.2 assists per game and has been a key factor in the Knicks’ recent success, winning 10 out of their last 12 games.
In the Knicks’ 142-118 victories over the Nets on Wednesday, Brunson scored an impressive 39 points on 15-for-18 shooting from the field. Head coach Tom Thibodeau praised Brunson’s ability to fight the double team and quickly pass the ball, highlighting his impressive playmaking skills in addition to his scoring ability. Brunson himself couldn’t explain his phenomenal performance, but his recent success has certainly caught the attention of basketball fans and analysts alike.
