Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh delivers another record-breaking performance

Summer McIntosh, a Canadian swimming star, set a new national record in the women’s 200-metre freestyle event, and also lowered her world junior record at the 2023 Pro Swim Series event in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She clocked one minute and 54.13 seconds, surpassing Taylor Ruck’s previous record of 1:54.44 and setting the fastest time ever recorded in the United States.

She also beat seven-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, who finished second in 1:54.96, ending her nine-year domestic win streak. It was Ledecky’s first defeat in a domestic freestyle long course final of 200m or longer since 2014.

Ella Jansen, another Canadian swimmer, finished sixth with a personal best time of 1:58.30 in the same event. Jansen also finished second in the women’s 400m individual medley later that day, while Tess Cieplucha finished third, and Bailey Andison finished fourth.

Lorne Winnington from Calgary finished second in the men’s 400m individual medley, and Aiden Norman of Calgary finished fourth in the 200m backstroke in a personal best of 2:01.26.

Katerine Savard, a three-time Olympian from Quebec, tied for third in the women’s 50m butterfly, and Sophie Angus finished fifth in the 50m breaststroke. On the men’s side, Ilya Kharun from Montreal was fifth in the 50m butterfly.

Summer McIntosh also broke her own national and world junior record in the women’s 200m butterfly on Thursday. Ledecky, who has won multiple gold medals in the Olympics, including in the 200m freestyle, has not yet confirmed her schedule for the upcoming Paris Olympics, where McIntosh is expected to be a multiple medal threat. The competition in Fort Lauderdale ends on Saturday.
