A new report from the Canadian Parliament’s Special Committee on Medical Assistance in Death has recommended that Canada expand its controversial assisted suicide program to include terminally ill “mature minors.”

The committee’s 138-page report offered several recommendations, including allowing euthanasia for those under 18, even though under current Canadian law, a person must be at least 18 years old to be legally euthanized.

The committee members pointed out that minors suffering from terminal illnesses have been excluded from the program despite their physical and mental suffering or disabilities.

The report suggests that if MAID for mature minors is allowed, it should only be available under certain conditions.

The report has sparked outrage from activist groups, who argue that minors cannot make such a weighty decision at their age.

The report recommends that the government consult with minors about MAID, including those with terminal illnesses and disabilities, on the child welfare system and Indigenous minors “within five years of the tabling of this report.”

Euthanasia is legal in seven countries, including Canada, where euthanasia and assisted suicide were legalized in 2016 for people aged 18 and over who met certain conditions.
