Camille Vasquez, a lawyer for Johnny Depp, tells Gayle King about their decision to appeal the verdict

Even though Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were both convicted guilty of slander by a jury last month, the legal conflict is still ongoing.

One of Depp’s attorneys, Camille Vasquez, spoke with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King about their choice to appeal the judgement.

Heard informed a Virginian court last week that she intended to challenge the $10.3 million settlement she was required to give her ex-husband.

After the jury judged Depp to be at fault and mandated that he pay his ex-wife $2 million, Depp’s team also filed a notice of appeal.

Vasquez stated that Heard’s team anticipated an appeal.

Do you need to think up a plan of action to deal with that? King enquired.

Absolutely, replied Vasquez. “We also did. In order for the court to have access to the entire record, Mr. Depp ultimately filed his own appeals.

And he is adamant on taking this case to court once more.

The interests of our customer must be safeguarded.”

If Heard hadn’t appealed, Vasquez claimed Depp’s team wouldn’t have done so. Vasquez continued, “For Mr. Depp, this was never about the money.”

She continued, “But as his agent, we must answer to the petition with his own appeal in order to safeguard his interests.

Depp expressed gratitude to his followers in a TikTok video after the initial decision and highlighted that “we shall all move forward together.”

When both sides are still litigating in court, how can anyone heal and move on? King enquired.

It follows a fairly conventional legal process, according to Vasquez.

We simply hope that the court will respect the decision, which we believe was the correct decision, and permit both parties to proceed.

Because, Camille, “Well, it sounds a little tit for tat-ish,” some could object. King commented.

It does, said Vasquez. “Yet it isn’t. This is a very common legal practise, to reiterate.

We must be ready to provide the court with access to the complete record if she is determined to appeal.”

Regarding the appeals, CBS News contacted Heard and her legal counsel. They stated that at this moment, they will not comment.

Heard claimed she “paid the price” for speaking truth to power in an interview with NBC last month.

She also charged Depp’s team with diverting the jury’s attention away from the case’s actual issues.

When asked about the remarks, Vasquez responded, “That view was not shared by the jury. And the verdict is self-evident.”
