Business Secretary announces a £5 million support fund for providing safety and security equipment to Ukraine’s civil nuclear sector

In support of the nation’s continuous efforts to stand with Ukraine, the UK’s Business and Energy Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, today announced a £5 million support fund that would be used to provide safety and security equipment to Ukraine’s civil nuclear sector.

High priority products, including as communications systems, radiation monitoring equipment, and personal protective equipment may be sent to Ukraine through the civil nuclear support fund.

This will make it possible for Chernobyl and Ukraine’s other nuclear sites to completely regain the high standards of safety and security required after Russian strikes.

In addition to helping Ukraine recover from Russian control of Chernobyl, the delivery of essential equipment to the country supports broader initiatives to equip guard personnel and improve the identification of illicit material trafficking both inside and across its borders.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the secretary for business and energy, said:

Energy systems are essential for maintaining both economic resilience and national security.

The UK is currently stepping up its assistance to the Ukrainian people in their hour of need by assisting in the reconnection of power throughout the nation and ensuring the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear sector, ensuring that their frontline is fully equipped in the face of Russia’s brutality.

The UK’s ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmonds, stated:

In addition to ensuring that the economy continues to run smoothly, ensuring Ukraine has access to energy will help keep people warm and enable hospitals to offer emergency healthcare when required.

I am proud of what the UK is doing to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression.

The information released today comes after the Foreign Secretary last week announced a £10 million Energy Support Fund as part of a plan to aid Ukraine in its fight against Putin and national reconstruction.

This money will enable crucial energy infrastructure repairs and assist in re-establishing power across the nation, keeping Ukraine’s energy system operational during times of war.

The package utilized UK knowledge and British enterprises to hasten Ukraine’s economic recovery and contained both short-term and long-term financial support for the Ukrainian people.

Together, these contributions bring UK assistance for Ukraine’s energy sector to $22 million.

This includes the UK’s earlier year donation of over 850 generators for £7 million, which are now being used to power critical services like hospitals and shelters.

These aid packages come as the world’s allies and partners came together last week in Switzerland for the Lugano Conference on Ukraine’s Recovery to take a unified stance with Ukraine.
