The General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc. Gbolahan Oki, has identified a crucial factor in combatting the issue of building collapse in the state: attitudinal change.
This revelation was made during a seminar organized by BusinessDay Media on Sustainable Building, with the theme “Addressing the Challenges of Building Collapse.” The seminar took place at the Four Points by Sheraton in Victoria Island, Lagos, on a Thursday.
The Attitude Problem
During his keynote address, Arc. Oki emphasized that a prevailing lackadaisical attitude towards construction and maintenance is a significant contributor to building collapses.
He stressed that a change in this attitude could have a profound impact on reducing such incidents within the state.
Identifying Key Challenges
Arc. Oki further highlighted various challenges that contribute to building collapses.
These include the non-adherence to proper processes, such as the exclusion of professionals in building construction, the use of substandard materials, unauthorized conversion of buildings without adequate supervision, and the engagement of unqualified individuals in the construction process.
A Collective Responsibility
In emphasizing the roles of all stakeholders in the built industry, Arc. Oki underscored the need for a collective effort to put an end to or reduce the incidence of building collapses.
He asserted that strict adherence to the building codes of the state is imperative for developers and property owners alike.
LASBCA’s Role in Mitigation
Arc. Oki also shed light on LASBCA’s role in mitigating these challenges.
The agency serves as an overseer, responsible for inspecting and regulating construction activities to ensure compliance with the state’s building codes.
He urged professional bodies to register deserving candidates, as this would promote professionalism and deter quackery within the industry.

The seminar attracted a notable gathering of professionals from the built industry, including Mr. Kunle Awobodu, a Former President of the Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB), and TPL Suleiman Yusuf, President of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), among others.
