Brunson smoothly evades the Nets defense as his 39 points leads the Knicks to victory

During his pregame press conference, Jacque Vaughn emphasized the importance of defending Jalen Brunson, the Knicks’ star guard who had scored 40 points against the Nets in their previous meeting on Feb. 13. Despite implementing defensive adjustments such as drop coverage and eventually blitzing, Brunson still managed to score 39 points in their latest game, including 30 in the first half. The Nets have been struggling to find a consistent defensive identity since the trade deadline, and their lack of defense was evident in their 142-118 loss to the Knicks.

Vaughn acknowledged Brunson’s ability to connect on contested shots from various angles, making him difficult to contain. The Knicks had a dominant performance, scoring 47 points in the first quarter, 81 by halftime, and connecting on 14 3-pointers in the first half. Spencer Dinwiddie stated that it’s difficult to respond when teams hit 3s at that clip. Even as the Nets experiment with different defensive strategies, Dinwiddie and Mikal Bridges expressed the need to figure out which one to focus on moving forward, with only 20 games left in the season.

Kevin Durant made his debut for the Suns on Wednesday, and Vaughn was asked whether he would check the box score in the morning. Vaughn replied that he watches all the games on League Pass and hopes Durant performs well. In other news, Ben Simmons will not play against the Celtics on Friday, and Yuta Watanabe was available for the Knicks game but didn’t play due to back soreness. Ed Sumner missed two consecutive games for personal reasons, and his availability for Friday’s game against the Celtics is uncertain. Lastly, Cameron Johnson scored 33 points in the game, which was a season-high and only five points short of his career high from last season.
