Britteny Griner returns to Phoenix after a year detainment in Russian prison over drug charges

After being detained for a year in a Russian prison on drug charges, Britteny Griner returned to the Phoenix Mercury in style. During a photo shoot for the Mercury on Friday, she showed off her new short hair style in her first appearance in uniform since re-signing with the team earlier in the month.

The Mercury shared a video of the photo shoot on Twitter, showing Griner smiling and giving a behind-the-back pass. The most noticeable change in Griner’s appearance is the loss of her signature dreadlocks, which she changed during her detainment to make it easier to deal with the brutal Russian winter, according to ESPN.

Griner was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February of last year when authorities found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her suitcase.

After a lengthy trial that concluded in August 2022, she was released almost ten months later in exchange for known international arms dealer Viktor Bout.

The seven-time All Star, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and 2014 WNBA champion returned to the court for a shoot-around session on Monday, where she appeared all smiles.

Griner has spent her entire nine-year WNBA career with the Mercury after being drafted as the first overall pick in 2013 out of Baylor. The Mercury’s first game of the season will be against the L.A. Sparks on May 19.
