According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the BRICS response to the COVID-19 pandemic showed what can be accomplished when countries cooperate in an atmosphere of friendship, solidarity, and responsibility.

The COVID-19 pandemic, according to President Ramaphosa, continues to have a catastrophic effect on people’s lives, way of life, economy, and communities all across the world.

On Thursday, he was making his opening remarks at the fictitious 14th BRICS Heads of State Summit.

In his remarks, the President stated, “We are here as BRICS members to proclaim our shared desire for a society in which all people have a meaningful stake, in which all have equal opportunity, and from which all can profit.”

In order to better prepare for future crises, he said that the opening of the BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa] Vaccine Research and Development Centre in March of this year will improve global health and scientific cooperation.

When it comes to ensuring that everyone has access to vaccines, the President stated it is quite concerning that the rest of the international community has not upheld the values of solidarity and cooperation.

“We urge wealthy nations, international organizations, and donors who purchase vaccinations to do so from producers in underdeveloped nations, especially Africa.

“In order to boost intra-BRICS trade, investment, and tourism, we must fully realize the immense potential of our economic partnership. Our united economic power ought to serve as an impetus for a long-term global economic revival, he said.

The President said South Africa continues to urge for dialogue and negotiation toward a peaceful resolution of problems around the world in accordance with its foreign policy tenets.

President Ramaphosa added, “We are worried that the attention and resources of the international community have been diverted from other grave conflicts and humanitarian situations.

He pointed out that serious concerns facing the world, such as climate change and sustainable development, are not being appropriately addressed.

In order for multilateral institutions to properly handle global concerns, President Ramaphosa emphasized the necessity for democratization of decision-making throughout the whole UN system.

He expressed excitement for the Friday High-Level Dialogue on Global Development.

In collaboration with other like-minded developing markets, BRICS offers an invaluable platform for addressing the major issues facing the global South.

The chance to develop a shared vision for a more inclusive, just, and stable international order is significant during this high-level dialogue. According to him, BRICS must fulfill a crucial role in providing global leadership.
