Boating accident on the Hudson River: two confirmed dead

On Tuesday, a seven-year-old kid and a woman, both 20, died after a chartered private boat carrying a dozen passengers sank on the Hudson River in New York City.

According to ABC 7, emergency services, as well as harbour, aviation, and dive units, were sent to save the 12 passengers who were apparently onboard a private recreational yacht.

The event occurred at 3 p.m., near Pier 84, according to the New York Police Department and NY Waterways, when the boat entirely tipped over into the river.

According to a spokeswoman for NY Waterways, two of its ferries participated in the rescue of nine people onboard the capsized ship.

According to police, two persons were retrieved from the river in serious condition, one of them was transferred to Bellevue Hospital and the other to Roosevelt Hospital. Both died subsequently, according to 1010 WINS.

A third individual had a significant but non-life threatening injury, while nine others had minor injuries.

In a statement, NY Waterways wrote that it ‘responded to an emergency when a private boat overturned in the Hudson River, just north of the Pier 79 Midtown ferry terminal.

‘Two NY Waterway ferries, the Garden State and the John Stevens, arrived on the scene and their crews rescued 9 passengers from the private boat.’

Officials said that, while the rescue had an impact on some ferry lines, all routes have resumed regular operation.

Iaidy Garcia, 28, said he was on the New Jersey side of the Hudson when he heard people aboard the capsizing boat shouting for help.

‘I saw people screaming in the water, and then I just called 911 to just make sure they were okay,’ Garcia told the New York Post.

According to his office, New York City Mayor Eric Adams came immediately after the incident since he was in the neighbourhood promoting the city’s recent Hudson Street streetscape renovation.
