Biden signs a book of condolences for the late Pope Benedict XVI

US President Joe Biden signed a book of condolences for former Pope Benedict XVI, who passed away over the weekend, at the Vatican embassy in Washington on Thursday.

According to the White House, Biden wrote, “Along with Roman Catholics across the United States, I mourn the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict.”

Biden continued, “He was a brilliant scholar and a genuine Holy Man.”

Biden, a longtime Roman Catholic, said that he had visited the Vatican from 2005 through 2013 during Benedict’s papacy.

Additionally, President Biden will undergo surgery.

“I will always cherish our time together discussing Catholic theology at the Vatican when he was Pope,” Biden wrote in his note. “He was a great theologian, and I learned a great deal from him in just a few hours.”
