President Joe Biden called the ‘MAGA crowd’ the ‘most extreme political organization in history’ in a full-throated attack on Republicans and their ‘ultra-MAGA’ agenda in a speech from the White House on Wednesday.
He also warned that the GOP could ban LGBT children from classrooms if Roe v. Wade is overturned and signaled they could even reverse the 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut case that struck down a state law banning the use of contraceptives by married couples.
It was a ramp-up in rhetoric from Biden following the Supreme Court leak that caused a firestorm and protests across the country and a further condemnation of Florida’s so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill that bans teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity before third grade.
‘What happens if you have state changes the law saying that that children who are LGBTQ can’t be in classrooms with other children? Is that is that legit under the way this decision is written?’ Biden questioned, referencing a Florida law that bans teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity before third grade.
‘What are the next things that are going to be attack? Because this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history. Recent American history.’
‘I believe I have the rights that I have not because the government gave them to me…but because I’m just a child of God. I exist,’ Biden added.
The president’s fiery attack on Republicans came just after Trump-backed Hillbilly Elegy author J.D. Vance won the Ohio GOP Senate primary, in a test on former President Trump’s hold over the Republican Party.
On Monday night a bombshell Supreme Court draft opinion was leaked showing that a majority of justices were in agreement to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion in all states, and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision, which upheld abortion rights.
Without the Roe precedent, 26 states are likely to ban all or most abortions, according to pro-choice policy group Guttmacher Institute.
On Tuesday Biden said that the Supreme Court decision could even affect gay marriage or other laws that relied on a right to privacy.
The president said in a statement it could regulate all the decisions in an American’s private life such as ‘who you marry, whether or not you decide to conceive a child or not, whether or not you can have a abortion, a range of other decisions.’
Biden also touted that his administration reduced the deficit by $350 billion in his first year in office and was on track to reduce it by $1.5 trillion during his second year in office. He noted that the government will pay down the national debt this quarter for the first time in six years.
