Barry Trotz is returning to the NHL as the Predators’ general manager, with his new role starting immediately.

The former coach of the Islanders and Capitals will take over the general manager title from David Poile on June 30, after Poile retires.

Poile originally hired Trotz as head coach for Nashville in 1997, and he served the team for 15 seasons before being fired.

Trotz has been a head coach for 23 seasons in total, winning 914 regular-season games. He won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in the 2017-2018 season.

Following his departure from the Islanders after missing the playoffs in the 2021-2022 season, Trotz took a break from coaching, declining an opportunity to coach his hometown team, the Jets.

In a June interview with NHL.com, Trotz stated that he needed time to address some personal matters.

David Poile will remain with the franchise in a consulting role, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Poile, who became the first general manager in NHL history to manage 3,000 games in that position with both the Capitals and Nashville during the 2022-23 season, also served as the Predators’ first coach. Trotz’s return to the NHL marks a full-circle moment for the franchise.
