Bad lock! A friend’s thrown car keys lodge in a Canadian woman’s face

After her companion threw them to her, a Canadian woman ended up with a pair of vehicle keys stuck in her face.

Renée Lariviere, 24, was left with her car keys lodged in her face after a friend tossed them to her in a 'freak accident'
Renée Lariviere, age 24, was ready to leave her apartment complex in the northern Canadian city of Sudbury to drive to McDonald’s when a friend threw her car keys to her.

However, as Renée reached for the car key, she accidentally stabbed herself in the face.

The metal of the key disappeared in Renée’s cheek, leaving the handle protruding awkwardly, and an x-ray revealed that it was buried an inch and a half deep in her nasal cavity.

Renée stated that she could not believe that the key had initially pierced her face since adrenaline stopped her from feeling pain.

However, after observing the key embedded in her cheek in the mirror, Renée’s initial worry was blindness.Renée Lariviere, 24, was about to leave her apartment complex in the city of Sudbury in northern Canada to go to McDonald's when one of her friends threw her car keys to her

The group of terrified friends dialed 911, and within minutes an ambulance arrived to transport Renée to Health Sciences North Hospital.

Doctors and nurses, according to Renée, who works for a landscaping company, were “amazed” by the “fluke accident” and now share photographs of her to demonstrate that “anything can happen.”

She stated, “I felt pressure, but I felt like I was struck in the face with the keys, as if I had missed my catch.”

My friend stared at me and exclaimed, “Oh my God, don’t move” before beginning to worry.

I suppose the adrenaline is pumping, so you don’t immediately feel it. I honestly did not believe him, so I walked to the restroom and examined my reflection.

I was terrified. My focus was on my eye.

Renée added: ‘I couldn’t care less about a scar. Scars will disappear if they are properly cared for. That was not my focus. My fear was whether or not I would be able to see.

‘I felt steady pressure, intense pressure, like if something heavy were resting on my face.

The local physicians were astonished. Doctors from other departments came to see it because they couldn’t believe it.

I had one of them request photographs so he could show them to his pupils. As an emergency department physician, he was attempting to convince them that anything could occur.

When Renée arrived at the hospital, she was quickly evaluated by medical personnel, who performed a CT scan and contacted a plastic surgeon to remove the key and suture the incision.

The surgeon confirmed to Renée that the key had become lodged within her nasal canals.

Since then, she has entirely recovered without issues or scarring.

Renée now believes that people should be more cautious as they go about their daily lives, as she acknowledges that the situation in question was a “near miss.”

Renée stated, “Now that I consider it, there is no way it could ever occur.

‘Like, what are the odds of it occurring, or [it’s] just dumb luck, I suppose, because there is some luck involved in the fact that nothing awful actually occurred.

It was a close call. If it had struck another location, it may have caused considerable damage.

“At no point did I lose my eyesight, but I was terrified of where they would remove it or whether it would touch something if I moved a certain way.” Thankfully, though, this did not occur.

“It was a relief when they received the CT scan findings and learned that everything was OK.

I really believe that individuals should be more cautious. I believe that we are oblivious to the frequency of random occurrences.

We’re so preoccupied with living our day-to-day lives that we don’t realize how many things could happen and how much they could harm us each day.
