Authorities vaccinate 55,000 cattle in the Free State to combat foot-and-mouth disease

Authorities report that 55,000 cattle in the Free State have been vaccinated to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

In an effort to stop the spread of the disease, Agriculture Minister Toko Didiza announced on Tuesday of last week that all cattle movements in the country would be suspended for 21 days.

Following an emergency meeting between Minister Didiza and Prime Minister Sisi Ntambela in Bloemfontein, plans are currently being developed to establish checkpoints in the affected areas of the province in order to decontaminate vehicles used to transport livestock and fodder.

22 farms in the province have reported outbreaks. The locations are in Viljoenskron, Marquardt, and Bethlehem. The affected farms quarantined and vaccinated their cattle.

Minister Didiza says: “There will be roadblocks immediately set up around this area of Marquard so that we can increase and disinfect every vehicle that passes through Marquard because we may not know if it carries the infection itself. We also want to call on all farmers to make sure that they properly clean the vehicles they transport animals in, whether it’s cattle or feed. That we try to improve our biosecurity as much as possible. That other forms of spread do not occur as a result of the vehicles we use to transport animals or feed them which may be infected.’
