Attorney General Merrick B. Garland to undergo a routine surgical procedure one week from today

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland will have routine surgery one week from today, on Thursday, July 7.

The Attorney General has benign prostate hyperplasia, also known as benign prostate enlargement (BPH). BPH is the “the most common prostate problem for men older than age 50,” according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it affects up to 90% of men over the age of 80 and roughly 50% of men between the ages of 51 and 60.

Attorney General Garland will have a TURP, or transurethral resection of the prostate, to treat BPH by removing the enlarged prostate tissue. General anaesthesia is necessary for the procedure, which typically takes less than an hour.

The Deputy Attorney General will act as the Attorney General throughout the process.

Attorney General Garland will stay in the hospital for one to two days after this kind of surgery, as is customary, for observation and monitoring. He expects to return to the office the week of July 11.
