ASUU sues FG over CONUA, NAMDA registration

Academic Staff Union of Universities is preparing a lawsuit against the Federal Government about the registration of Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics and National Association of Medical and Dental Academics.

On Thursday, ASUU’s attorney, Femi Falana, stated this on Channels Television.

Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, presented CONUA and NAMDA with registration certificates on Tuesday.
Ngige, while giving registration certificates to the two unions, stated that the two organizations will coexist alongside ASUU.

The ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022, according to MySchoolGist, in protest over unpaid allowances and an enhanced welfare package from the Federal Government.

Falana, the chief legal counsel for ASUU, told Channels Television that the union would contest the Federal Government’s registration of the two unions.

ASUU will be litigated. Falana stated, “It’ll be the NIC.”
In an interview with Arise Television, the former head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, reportedly accused Ngige of complicating matters.

“He filed the matter before the industrial court, and ASUU challenged the ruling. He has now registered two unions while attempting to outlaw ASUU.

Jega continued, “If this government permits it, I feel it will be a recipe for disaster and may generate more problems than it solves in terms of strike action.”
