As news of the shooting rampage in a Chicago suburb’s north started to spread on Monday, Google’s Fourth of July celebration tribute page appeared to go horribly wrong.
The search engine usually creates custom images and animations for its “Google Doodle” to commemorate holidays and special days. Normal circumstances would apply on America’s birthday.
But the memorial page, which had animated red, white, and blue splashes along with some fireworks sprinkled around the search page, started to fill up with headlines about the horrific news that was happening in the city’s Highland Park neighborhood.
The Fourth of July artwork this year featured the Google logo flipping a burger into the air while donning a chef’s hat.
Each “o” danced while donning an Uncle Sam hat.
The ‘l’ flies the American flag while the ‘g’ sings into a microphone while perched atop a box.
It was seen that the final ‘e’ was sucking a red, white, and blue ice lolly.
The Doodle effectively serves as a reminder of life’s simple pleasures for Americans, which made hearing of the shooting all the more shocking.
At least six people were killed and at least 30 were injured when a shooter from a rooftop opened fire on an Independence Day parade in a suburb of Chicago, sending hundreds of marchers, parents pushing strollers, and kids riding bikes running for their lives.
An hour-long manhunt in and around Highland Park, a wealthy neighborhood of roughly 30,000 people on Chicago’s north shore, ended on Monday evening, according to authorities, with the capture of a man identified as a person of interest in the shooting.
On the parade route, where many locals had staked out great viewing areas early in the day for the traditional event, the shooting took place.
Hundreds of parade attendees fled after being hit by dozens of gunshots, some of which were clearly bled.
The shooting on July 4th was only the most recent incident to disrupt American culture.
In recent months, killing grounds have expanded to include schools, churches, supermarkets, and now community parades.
This time, the bloodshed occurred as the country looked for an occasion to commemorate its founding and the ties that continue to bind it.
