In the last five years, the number of cases of modern slavery has more than doubled to about 13,000 every year, with Albanians accounting for the majority of claims from foreign nationals.

Deportees and illegal migrants attempting to cross the Channel are increasingly claiming to be victims of contemporary slavery.
The government is now seeking to make it more difficult to use the Modern Slavery Act 2015 to prevent deportation and criminal charges.

Armelind Rexha, an Albanian who appeared in court in 2019 charged with producing cannabis worth up to £672,000, invoked the Act, and the judge accepted his argument that he was forced to do so.

Another Albanian who murdered a woman in front of her eight-year-old daughter last year claimed he was a victim of people traffickers in order to avoid deportation.
