Apple ex-employee admits stealing $17 million

According to federal prosecutors, a former Apple employee admitted guilt on Tuesday to cheating the tech company out of more than $17 million over a seven-year period.

Dhirendra Prasad detailed his schemes while employed as a buyer for Apple’s Global Service Supply chain, the U.S. government, and other entities in a signed plea bargain. The legal office said.

According to authorities, Prasad said the fraud entailed “taking bribes, falsifying bills, stealing components, and inducing Apple to pay for things and services never obtained.”

In one plan, according to the prosecution, Prasad arranged for the delivery of Apple components to a third party vendor’s warehouse, where they were then repackaged and sold back to Apple.

According to the statement, “Prasad confirmed these scams lasted until 2018 and eventually caused a loss to Apple of more than $17 million.”

Prasad, 52, pleaded guilty to many charges, including conspiracy to conduct fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, according to the prosecution.

When he is sentenced in March of next year, he might spend more than 20 years in jail.

In two other federal investigations, two of his accomplices—outside vendors who transacted business with Apple—have been prosecuted.
