The vice-chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in North-West Nigeria, Salihu Lukman, has offered an explanation for the Labour Party’s increasing popularity.
Lukman believes that Nigerians are dissatisfied with the existing political parties, including his own party, the APC.
In a statement released to journalists, Lukman highlighted the need for a dynamic and innovative political structure, which he believes is lacking within the ruling APC.
Lukman Criticizes Lack of Progress in APC’s Internal Structures
Lukman pointed out that despite the creation of new structures within the APC, such as the women’s wing, youth wing, and persons living with disabilities wing, there has been a lack of progress and organization within these wings.
He expressed disappointment that since April 2022, when the new National Working Committee (NWC) assumed office, no significant initiatives have been undertaken to empower and engage these important segments of the party.
Labour Party’s Success Reflects Nigerian Frustrations with Political Parties
Lukman cited the success of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections as evidence of Nigerian citizens’ frustration with the current political climate.
He emphasized that Nigerians are seeking political parties with vibrant structures that foster internal debates and represent diverse interests.
Lukman suggested that the popularity of the Labour Party indicates a desire for change and a departure from closed political structures.
Political Legitimacy and Engaging Organized Groups
Lukman warned that unless the APC embraces a more inclusive and open approach, President Bola Tinubu may face challenges in securing the necessary political legitimacy to implement difficult policy choices.
He stressed the importance of winning the support of Nigerians through meaningful engagement with organized groups.
Lukman acknowledged that while difficult decisions are necessary to address the nation’s challenges, the government’s ability to implement them effectively is contingent upon gaining the support and cooperation of the Nigerian people.
