Anton Walkes, a defender for Charlotte FC, died on Thursday from injuries sustained in a boat accident off the coast of Miami. He had 25 years of age.
After the collision between two boats in the Miami Marine Stadium basin, Walkes was discovered unconscious and taken to a hospital.
According to a study from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, one of the boats that crashed was piloted by Anton Walkes.
As more investigations are performed to determine the cause, the agency stated that it is unclear if anyone else was wounded in the accidents.
Charlotte FC issued a statement about the passing of Walkes.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Anton Walkes passed away this morning,” the club said in a statement. He may rest in peace.
David Tepper, the club’s owner, said, “He was an exceptional son, father, partner, and teammate whose cheerful outlook on life inspired everyone he met.
Major League Soccer issued the following statement in response to the unfortunate news: “There are no words to express the sorrow felt by everyone in Major League Soccer today upon learning of the tragic death of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC. Anton was a talented and passionate athlete whose teammates and fans adored him.
Tottenham Hotspur also commented through Twitter, saying, “We are profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of former player Anton Walkes. Everyone at the Club is thinking of his family and friends during this tragic time.”
Anton Charles Walkes began his club career in July 2013 with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, making one League Cup appearance for the team.
On September 21, 2016, he made his debut with the first team in the 80th minute of a 5–0 EFL Cup victory against Gillingham on September 21, 2016. Walkes also served as captain three times in the UEFA Youth League group stage, including twice against Bayer Leverkusen.
