Anthony Albanese avoids responding to fresh claims from Tanya Plibersek that she would have won in 2019

Anthony Albanese has chosen not to respond to new allegations from Tanya Plibersek, who claims that she would have won the Labor Party leadership in 2019 if she had stood for it.

In an extract from Margaret Simons’ book Tanya Plibersek: On Her Own Terms, the former Labor deputy leader stated that she was “pretty confident” that she would have won the leadership contest against now Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

However, Mr Albanese avoided questions about this assertion, stating that Ms Plibersek was his friend and was “doing a great job” as Environment Minister.

In the book extract, Ms Plibersek revealed that one of the reasons she did not enter the race for party leadership in 2019 was to support her daughter, who was a victim of abuse.

She wanted to be there for her daughter, who had to appear as a witness in a court case against her abuser. When asked if she didn’t run because she didn’t have the numbers to win, Ms Plibersek dismissed this notion and stated that if she had run, she would have won.

Ms Plibersek posted a video on social media on Saturday morning, urging survivors of abuse to seek help and sharing her daughter’s story. She and her husband were “devastated” when they found out what had happened to their daughter, which unfortunately was all too common an experience in Australia.

In the video, she spoke of the need for peer support and the establishment of a peer support volunteer-run organisation called The Survivor Hub, which seeks to help those who are going through similar experiences.
