ANCYL visits the tomb of Magaqa prior to Peter Mokaba’s address

On the weekend, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the Harry Gwala region of KwaZulu-Natal visited the burial of its late secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

This comes after the provincial ANC leadership announced plans to give a memorial lecture for the league’s former president, Peter Mokaba, in the region. Mokaba died on June 9, 2002, of pneumonia.

Gwala Qiniso Mnguni, secretary-general of the ANCYL in the region, stated that the organization is committed to preserving Magaqa’s legacy.

“We felt we could not hold a memorial lecture for Peter Mokaba without first remembering one of our own, as comrade Magaqa is from the Harry Gwala region,” Mnguni explained.

“We are in the process of renaming Umzimkhulu local municipality after his name in order to preserve his legacy for future generations to learn about. We have already been able to name a sub-region after him.”

Mnguni also expressed his gratitude on behalf of the league after league leaders received a warm welcome from Magaqa’s family.

“They are familiar with us since we frequently visit the family and advise them of our plans for using comrade Magaqa’s name. They are pleased that we are perpetuating their son’s legacy.

“When we met with the mayor of Umzimkhulu, the ANC made it clear that we have a responsibility toward Magaqa’s family, as he has children who must attend school and be cared for.”

He noted that the ruling party is working hard to rebuild the public’s trust, noting that the ANC is in charge of all municipalities in the region. “We have ceased fighting. People lose faith in us as a result of our previous conflicts, and service delivery is delayed.”
