The renowned 1960s painting “White Disaster” by Andy Warhol sold at auction in New York on Wednesday evening for $85 million.

After two minutes and a brief bidding war between two bidders, the artwork from 1963 was sold for a total of $74 million, or $85.4 million including all charges and fees.

In 2013, the sale of a work from Warhol’s “Death and Disaster” series set a new record for the artist at $105 million.

In May, the Marilyn Monroe painting “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” by Andy Warhol was auctioned for $195 million, making it the most expensive 20th-century piece ever sold at auction.

“White Disaster (White Car Crash 19 Times),” as it is properly titled, is a silkscreen ink and graphite piece on a 12-foot-tall canvas that displays the same black-and-white image of a gruesome car crash 19 times.

“At the end of 1962, Warhol paints Marilyn Monroe, beginning his fascination with celebrity imagery,” said David Galperin, head of contemporary art Americas at Sotheby’s. “However, it was her death at the end of ’62 and the circus surrounding her that caught Warhol’s attention,” Galperin added.

The artwork sold on Wednesday was from a private collection, and Sotheby’s did not disclose the buyer’s identity.
