Stockholm — Alain Aspect of France, John F. Clauser of the United States, and Anton Zeilinger of Australia have been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in physics for their contributions to quantum information science.

Hans Ellegren, General Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, revealed the winner at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on Tuesday.

Monday marked the beginning of a week of Nobel Prize announcements, with Swedish scientist Svante Paabo winning the prize in medicine for uncovering secrets of Neanderthal DNA that provided crucial insights into our immune system.

Wednesday is chemistry class and Thursday is literature class. The Nobel Peace Prize for 2022 will be awarded on Friday, and the economics prize will be awarded on October 10.

While physicists frequently tackle challenges that appear to be far away from everyday concerns – such as microscopic particles and the enormous mysteries of space and time – their research serves as the basis for several practical applications of science.

The prize was granted to three scientists, Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi, whose work has helped to describe and anticipate complicated natural forces, so enhancing our understanding of climate change.
