Al Ahly’s worst league finish in thirty years was recorded without Pitso Mosimane

The Egyptian Giants Al Ahly finished the season in third place, their poorest performance in thirty years in the Egyptian premier league.

Club of the Century finished the season with a 4-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra. However, second-placed Fagry Lakay’s Pyramids FC and champions Zamalek were already out of reach heading into the last matchday, leaving Al Ahly outside of the top two for the first time in three decades.

Percy Tau, a Bafana Bafana international, missed the final match of the season at the Cairo International Stadium and has appeared just five times since Pitso Mosimane’s dismissal in June.

In his sole season with Al Ahly, Tau made 31 appearances, scored eight goals, and sent out six assists.

There have been rumors that Tau will be leaving the North African giants, but Al Ahly insiders have disputed this. Nevertheless, given his troubles since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion, it would not be surprising if he opted for more familiar surroundings in the north.

Injuries have plagued the 28-year-old forward, making it tough for him to get a spot in head coach Ricardo Soares’ final lineup of the season.

Soares’ tenure in probably the most important position in African football has fallen far short of the club’s expectations.

The Portuguese national coach took over after Mosimane’s resignation, but he has failed to improve the team’s play, finishing the season with nine wins and three losses, a record that could herald his exit from the club.

The Red Devils, however, will represent Egypt in the CAF Champions League next season after finishing in the top two during Mosimane’s tenure as head coach at the midpoint of the current campaign. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) took the decision following the decision to postpone the league due to Covid-19.
