Boris Becker, the disgraced tennis player, is adjusting to life behind bars as he deals with the ‘continuous noise’ and limited servings of basic food.
After being served corned beef on his first night in prison, the 54-year-old champion, who was known for enjoying luxuries such as Cuban cigars, good wines, and fillet steak, was brought back down to earth.
Last Thursday, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for concealing assets during bankruptcy procedures.
Becker is now unable to deal with the amount of food on offer at Wandsworth Prison, according to insiders, and is supplementing his meals with chocolate, cookies, and bananas from the canteen.
The athlete is also claimed to be having trouble sleeping in his six-square-metre cell, but is scheduled to be moved to a less difficult penitentiary in the coming weeks.
‘He’s having a bad time, and the worst part is the food,’ a source told the Sun.
‘He can’t believe how awful things are and how small the portions are.’ Corned beef was one of his first meals, and it wasn’t very tasty.
‘However, he’ll have to adjust.’ He’s also surprised by the prison’s lack of hygiene due to its overcrowding.’
Becker’s fiancée was seen visiting him earlier this week after he called her and his 86-year-old mother from prison.
Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro was seen wearing a denim jacket, joggers, and a cap while carrying a silver Puma holdall as she walked out of the famed Victorian prison.
According to sources, Becker was allowed to make two phone calls while in jail, one to Lilian, who is in her forties, and the other to his elderly mother.
His estranged wife has stated that he is ‘doing okay’ behind bars and that his mental health is good, despite the fact that the jail ‘was not a five-star hotel.’
Prisoners at Wandsworth are allowed one phone call when they arrive, but the athlete was given an extra one as a ‘celebrity bonus,’ according to a member of staff.
Lilian, Becker’s girlfriend, is a political risk analyst who began seeing the three-time Wimbledon winner in the summer of 2020 after he divorced his ex-wife Lilly after nine years of marriage in 2018.
She holds three degrees, including a master’s degree in African studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, and is multilingual, speaking five languages, including German.
