Absa ATM apparent malfunctions and spews out notes amounting to R10 000 leaves many divided

A R10,000 worth of notes appeared to be spat out of an Absa ATM due to an apparent failure, which has many people in disarray.

The disagreement is not over the failure itself, but rather the two siblings who chose to report the event after finding notes all over the floor and the Absa ATM.

When Alysia, 32, and Shane Mowers, 28, went to the Absa ATM in Oudtshborn, in the Klein Karoo region of the Western Cape, on July 19, they were completely astonished to see the floor covered in R50, R100, and R200 notes.

Real money spewed out by an Absa ATM in the Western Cape.

The two faithful siblings avoided the urge to keep the money for themselves, reporting the incident to the police instead.

According to News24, Alysia claimed that a bystander tried to get her to take the money; however, she resisted, declaring, “I’m not touching this money.”

She was motivated to maintain her position because the money could have come from a failed mortgage transaction.

According to News24, Alysia, a teacher, told her class about the occurrence, which left them in awe.

ABSA has confirmed the occurrence. According to the report, an investigation into the incident showed that an incomplete transaction was to blame for the cash coming out of the ATM.

Absa’s regional executive for physical channels, Pholushi Malesa, recommended clients using ATMs to always make sure their transaction is complete before walking away, even though this was an isolated incidence.

Additionally, the bank engaged all parties, including the consumer who reported the issue.

No case was recorded to the police, according to police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie who talked to News24. The police were also made aware of the occurrence through social media.

Social media users disagreed on the position that the siblings took.

Thato Matseke said: “For someone employed by the government it would’ve been risky but for someone unemployed take it. Imagine losing your job, medical benefits and pension over +/-10k. No that’s like a month’s pay”.

Hlozi Nkisi said: “Their ancestors must be turning in their graves, they really don’t deserve this”.

Sakhile Matthews Mtshalu said: “They must be arrested”.

However, Kåråbêlô Maśøťė opposed this opinion. He said:. “They would get arrested if they took it because the bank would notice and start looking for them. Remember there are cameras at the bank, so they did a great job”.
