CIANJUR, Indonesia — On Monday, a strong earthquake killed at least 162 people and wounded hundreds on the major island of Indonesia. Some occupants were covered with blood and rubble as they ran onto the street in terror.

As he delivered the latest death toll in the distant, rural province of West Java, Governor Ridwan Kamil stated that many of the victims were public-school students who had finished their courses for the day and were taking extra lessons at Islamic institutions when they fell.

Hospitals were inundated with injured patients, and it was anticipated that the number would continue to climb. Due to the dispersed, rural population, no exact figures were available, but many structures fell and locals and emergency personnel braced for bad news.

Dwi Sarmadi, an employee of an Islamic educational organization in a neighboring region, stated, “All the buildings were entirely destroyed.”

Approximately 175,000 people reside in the town of Cianjur, which is part of a hilly area with a population of over 2.5 million. The residents of Cianjur, known for their piety, reside primarily in one- and two-story cities and smaller dwellings in the surrounding countryside.

More than 13,000 individuals whose homes were severely damaged were evacuated to evacuation centers, according to Kamil.

In the Cianjur district, which is roughly three hours’ drive from the capital, Java, first responders treated the injured on stretchers and blankets outside hospitals, on terraces, and in parking lots. The wounded, including youngsters, were provided with oxygen masks and intravenous lines. Several were revived.

Hundreds of individuals waited for treatment outside the Cianjur regional hospital.

“I was employed within my office building. The structure was not harmed, although numerous items collapsed due to the intense shaking caused by the earthquake. My leg was struck by hefty objects,” stated Sarmadi.

After various overcrowded clinics were unable to see him, Sarmadi was waiting outside a tent outside the hospital. Many folks were arriving in worse condition.

“I sincerely hope they can take care of me soon,” he stated.

Hasan, a construction worker who, like many Indonesians, only uses one name, is also being transported to the hospital.

“I collapsed. “It was quite powerful,” remarked Hasan.

“I observed my buddies fleeing the building on foot. But it was too late to escape, and I was slammed into the wall.”

Late in the afternoon, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck an area in the province of West Java, Indonesia, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents, some weeping and carrying their children, escaped damaged homes (6.2 miles). In the wider Jakarta region, high-rise buildings trembled and several people escaped.

In many Cianjur homes, concrete and roof tiles have fallen into bedrooms.

When the quake struck, shopkeeper Dewi Risma was assisting customers and ran for the exit.

She stated, “Vehicles on the road halted because the earthquake was so intense.” “I felt it shake three times, but the first one lasted around 10 seconds and was the strongest. The roof of the store adjacent to where I work had fallen, and two people were reportedly injured.

Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, stated earlier in the day that there were still twenty-five people buried in the debris in the village of Cijedil.

Multiple landslides shut down roads in the Cianjur district. A hospital was among the dozens of structures damaged, according to the agency. Reportedly, there were power disruptions.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia recorded at least twenty-five aftershocks.

“The earthquake felt so intense. My coworkers and I decided to use the emergency stairs to exit our ninth-floor office,” said Vidi Primadhania, a worker in the capital, where many residents fled into the streets and others hid under desks.

Because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” a ring of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin, the country of more than 270 million people is frequently struck by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.

In February, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in West Sumatra province killed at least 25 people and injured more than 460. In January 2021, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in West Sulawesi province killed more than 100 people and injured nearly 6,500.

In 2004, a powerful earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean killed nearly 230,000 people in a dozen countries, the majority of them in Indonesia.
