CIANJUR, Indonesia — On Monday, a strong earthquake killed at least 162 people and wounded hundreds on the major island of Indonesia. Some occupants were covered with blood and rubble as they ran onto the street in terror.
As he delivered the latest death toll in the distant, rural province of West Java, Governor Ridwan Kamil stated that many of the victims were public-school students who had finished their courses for the day and were taking extra lessons at Islamic institutions when they fell.

Approximately 175,000 people reside in the town of Cianjur, which is part of a hilly area with a population of over 2.5 million. The residents of Cianjur, known for their piety, reside primarily in one- and two-story cities and smaller dwellings in the surrounding countryside.

Hundreds of individuals waited for treatment outside the Cianjur regional hospital.
“I was employed within my office building. The structure was not harmed, although numerous items collapsed due to the intense shaking caused by the earthquake. My leg was struck by hefty objects,” stated Sarmadi.
After various overcrowded clinics were unable to see him, Sarmadi was waiting outside a tent outside the hospital. Many folks were arriving in worse condition.
“I sincerely hope they can take care of me soon,” he stated.

Hasan, a construction worker who, like many Indonesians, only uses one name, is also being transported to the hospital.
“I collapsed. “It was quite powerful,” remarked Hasan.
“I observed my buddies fleeing the building on foot. But it was too late to escape, and I was slammed into the wall.”

When the quake struck, shopkeeper Dewi Risma was assisting customers and ran for the exit.
