A major Melbourne highway is at a standstill after a horror crash left drivers lying on the road in need of medical attention

After a horrific collision involving a Vinnies truck and a motorist that left victims laying on the road in need of medical assistance, a major Melbourne motorway is at a standstill.

In the moments leading up to the serious collision on the West Gate Bridge on Tuesday at 10.50am, witnesses claimed to have seen a silver Ford “driving like a madman.”

When leaving the city’s central business district, the truck rolled onto its side and blocked multiple lanes of traffic.

Soon after the incident, at least three men appeared to be restrained in helicopter footage.

One witness told Radio 3AW that “there are a number of people lying there being attended to by the public” because “the ambulance and the police just can’t get through because the roads are completely blocked.”

Another motorist on the outgoing side of the bridge reported seeing a silver Ford fly past him on the bridge “like a bullet.”

The driver claimed, “He was driving like a mad man.”

He won’t make it to the other side of the bridge, I told myself.

The caller claimed that the car and the Vinnies truck were both involved in the collision.

How many people have been hurt is not known.

Drivers have been advised to stay away from the area and take Geelong Road, not the West Gate Freeway, to reach the M80 Ring Road interchange.
