After being prosecuted in connection with the death of a retired teacher who was struck and died in an accident at a traffic signal last year, a cyclist has appeared in court.

79-year-old Jane Stone was struck by a bike as she crossed the street while out for a stroll in the evening.

Stewart McGinn, 29, is charged with reckless or wanton driving while operating a bicycle, which is said to have caused bodily harm.

Following the mishap on June 7, 2021, at the intersection of Wonastow Road and Somerset Road in Monmouth, Gwent, the retired teacher was brought to the hospital.

Sadly, Ms. Stone passed away on June 11 due to severe brain injuries four days later.

In front of the Newport Magistrates Court was McGinn, a resident of Troy Way.

Since the claim is an indictable criminal matter and is covered by the 1861 Offences Against Person Act, no plea was made.

The defendant will show up in front of Newport Crown Court on July 14 after receiving unconditional bail.

Jane was remembered by her family in the following way after passing away last summer: “Jane was a very caring and active part of the Monmouth community.”

She was raised and educated in Monmouth before completing her teacher training in London, where she earned recognition and admiration for her work.

She returned to her origins after becoming a widow and retiring, getting deeply involved in many facets of Monmouth life.

She served as a past churchwarden of St. Thomas’s Church and was actively involved in all church activities, serving as a lay Eucharistic minister and sacristan as well as providing assistance and support to community members when required.

Jane was in good physical shape and had recently raised money by abseiling down the church tower.

She also served as group leader for The Arts Society’s Church Recorders (formerly National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies).

Jane participated in the Monmouth Choral Society and loved attending Merlin Music Society performances.

She loved long distance hiking and established a goal of traveling 1,000 miles each year.

She was now hiking Offa’s Dyke from South to North Wales with a walking companion.

Jane was a cherished family member who kept a close eye on the lives of her great nieces and nephews.
