A thief was detained by Atlanta police on suspicion of fatally stabbing a grandma in her house in one of the richest areas of the city.

Mayor of Atlanta Andre Dickens said that Antonio Brown, 23, had been detained for questioning in the stabbing death of Ellen Bowles, 77, who was discovered in the garage of her almost $800,000 house.

On Saturday, her own son found her stabbed corpse.

Over the weekend, police shared a picture showing a guy thought to be brown entering Bowles’ Lexus SUV. According to police, Brown may have been caught as he tried to take the automobile when the grandma entered.

Bowles resided in a gated community in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, which has contemplated breaking away from Atlanta and establishing its own government in response to the crime epidemic there.

According to police, Brown was apprehended when a local approached them with information.

They said that Bowles’ vehicle was discovered in DeKalb County, which borders Buckhead, and that it had been driven to many sites after the murder.

Charles Hampton Jr., a deputy police chief, said that it was thought Brown entered Bowles’ area on foot but did not elaborate on how he got past the gate.

Hampton said there was a chance Brown had assistance from a partner and that the investigation was ongoing.

On Saturday, Michael Bowles went home to see his mother for the holidays and found her dead in her garage.

Police estimated that the murder took place that day at between 11:30 and 12:30.

Bowles, who according to the police had been stabbed numerous times, looked to be getting ready for Christmas when she interrupted Brown.

In his announcement of Brown’s arrest, Hampton remarked, “We got who we were searching for right now.”

A GoFundMe website created in Bowles’ honor described her as “kind, lovely, humorous, and loving.” Bowles was a mother of two.

The Atlanta Humane Society will receive all of the fundraiser’s revenues on behalf of the woman, who is known as a strong animal lover.

In a statement, her son Michael stated he would devote his life to ensuring that his mother’s passing would prompt action against violent crime.

“I’m dedicated to spreading the word about this shocking catastrophe. Additionally, I want everyone to know that none of us are safe,” he said. “I hope that others read this and comprehend it, so that maybe we can all work together to bring about some change. For my mother, I’ll always keep that message close to my heart.

After a newsletter surfaced in 2008 suggesting that the move might decrease residents’ taxes by 50%, Buckhead residents began to discuss secession from the rest of Atlanta.

The movement generally died down, until it was revived in 2021 to try to stop the local increase in violent crime.

Bill White, a resident of Buckhead and a session advocate, said at the time to Bloomberg, “We are living in a combat zone in Buckhead.” Shootings and murders just never stop.

As recently as this past May, a non-binding advisory question asking Georgians throughout the state whether or not they wanted to see Buckhead split from Atlanta was included on the state’s gubernatorial primary ballot.

What the findings of the poll were are unknown.
