50K in the Bay Area lose electricity due to a fire at Oakland airport

Sunday, a fire at a power substation caused temporary power disruptions at Oakland International Airport and left 50,000 customers in the east San Francisco Bay Area without electricity, according to Oakland fire officials.

A transformer was on fire when the Oakland Fire Department responded to a fire on Pacific Gas & Electric property in the early afternoon, according to a video posted to Twitter by an anonymous Oakland Fire Department official. The blaze has been put out.

Oakland and Alameda lost electricity due to the fire. The website of Pacific Gas & Electric anticipated that electricity would be restored by evening’s middle. The spokespersons did not react promptly to a phone call for comment.

Oakland International Airport, which handles approximately 170 aircraft each day, was without power for over two hours, according to spokesman Robert Bernardo of the San Francisco Chronicle. KNTV stated that a few security lines remained open for inspection. Posts on social media depicted enormous groups gathered at airport baggage claim.

In addition to disrupting airport public transportation, the power outage congested traffic on adjacent highways.

Airport officials could not be reached for comment immediately.
