A man was sentenced to eight months in prison for biting a police dog on the head and assaulting a police officer during an arrest.
Matthew Boulter, 34, of Grimsby, was detained on the evening of Sunday, August 14 after police received accusations of him attacking three persons and committing criminal damage outside of a venue on Bethlehem Street in Grimsby.
The court heard that when Boulter was being arrested for assault, he struck and kicked some fencing towards a Humberside police officer, causing minor injuries.
He then nipped Xander on the head before grabbing his collar and twisting it.
PD Xander made a full recovery and returned to work the next day, according to the police. Detective Sergeant Thomas Crosfill stated, ‘Assaulting emergency service employees is unacceptable, and our police dogs provide important assistance. They are members of the police department.
‘The earlier incidents occurred in a highly public area and caused anguish to the victims and others.
“We want to ensure that our cities are secure places for people to live, work, and visit, so I am glad that Boulter was arrested and jailed for these offenses so quickly.”
PD Xander fortunately made a speedy recovery and returned to work the next day.
It is not the first time in the line of duty that police canines have been attacked.
During his seven-and-a-half years with Humberside Police, during which he was wounded three times, PD Logan, who retired in June, was shot three times.
Boulter was sentenced to eight months in prison on Tuesday, August 16th, after pleading guilty to attacking a member of the emergency services, inflicting unnecessary suffering to an animal, assault, criminal damage, and two instances of battery.
