After the stabbing on Ladbroke Grove beneath the Westway flyover at 8pm, officers provided the victim first aid until paramedics arrived. He was carried to an ambulance ‘through huge crowds in tricky circumstances’

The unnamed victim died at a local hospital. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by police.

Witness Brian Stovell said, ‘I knew from the amount of blood he wouldn’t make it.’ The crowd was swept up in the carnival’s energy.

He also said a civilian put on surgical gloves to try to save the man. Another woman in distress seems to have been accompanying him.’

At 9.30pm, police triggered exceptional powers in the area under a Section 60 order, allowing them to stop and search anyone for ‘dangerous instruments and offensive weapons’ until 1am. Detectives said this year’s festival had ‘violent incidents and serious stabbings’

Scotland Yard reported 209 arrests since the carnival began at 12.01am today, including 46 for assault, eight for sexual assault, 36 for drug possession, five for criminal damage, and 27 for public order.

Police also made 10 arrests for possessing psychoactive substances, 33 for possessing an offensive weapon, 7 for drink or drug driving, 1 theft, 1 robbery, and 35 ‘other’ arrests.

While the final number of arrests for this year’s carnival is not yet known, 353 were made in 2019, compared to 374 in 2018, 313 in 2017, and 454 in 2016.

Yesterday’s stabbing was the first homicide at the Notting Hill Carnival since 2004, when Lee Christopher Subaran, 27, was shot dead near Kensal Green Underground station.

Yesterday’s ‘Adults Day’ procession ended at 8.30pm after 13 steel bands, 72 mast bands, six Brazilian bands, 36 sound systems, and 300 stalls participated.

A statement praised PH Sandown’s bravery and caring character. Good-natured PH Sandown was the ‘go-to horse’ for mounted branch officers starting training.

PH Sandown joined the Met in 2015, and his genial personality captivated over officers. During training, he helped novice police gain confidence.

Pro at policing all types of events in London, he showed daring and courage at football matches and the Mounted Activity Ride at Olympia and the Mounted Musical Ride.

The horse was ‘loved passionately’ and’sorely missed,’ the message stated.

‘Police horses are working animals, but PH Sandown had personality. He was always nuzzling pockets for snacks. PH Sandown was liked by the Mounted Branch family. Everyone will miss him.

The horse’s death is being investigated post-mortem.
