18 months after Ever Given, a ship blocks the Suez Canal

Tug boats were attempting to free a ship that went aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal late on Wednesday, according to two nautical sources.

Although a different source from the Suez Canal Authority later said the ship had been refloated, the sources claimed that the ship, believed to be the crude oil tanker Affinity V, had been obstructing movement in the canal.

It happens 18 months after the Ever Given became stuck for six days, disrupting supplies all across the globe.

According to a source with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and state TV, tug boats were used to refloat the ship after it momentarily became stranded in Egypt’s Suez Canal late yesterday.

A SCA source later noted that soon after, regular communications had resumed.

The SCA did not immediately issue a comment about the event.

TankerTrackers, a ship tracking service, reported that the Aframax tanker Affinity V seemed to have lost control while travelling south via the Suez Canal.

According to TankerTrackers on Twitter, “She briefly backed up traffic and is currently facing south, although moving slowly by tugboat help.”
